What You Should Do If You Do Not Want a Job Promotion Offer

By Bill Duggen

An offer for a promotion would simply mean better position in the company, a better environment or office as well as better pay! Though there may be dozens of advantages one can reap from accepting a promotion, experts say that there are also valid reasons why you need to pass on such an opportunity.

Of course, it would not be as easy as it sounds. It could lead you to leaving your team, people who have earned your trust or those you would call family at work. Furthermore, a change of working environment or office can also cause a lot of negative effects which include poor performance for the new job thus leading to termination. It is recommended that you have second thoughts about accepting that great offer.

The moment you've decided to just turn down the generous offer, how would you do it in such a way that it would not cause any negative effect with regard to relationship with others and your workplace? If you have been working for the company for quite some time now and have been able to establish a good relationship with other workers then turning down a job promotion would be a bit easier. With the management already aware of your skills and performance, they can easily trust you of whatever decision you will make. You can simply reject the offer saying "I think its not time for me" and your boss can openly accept it.Many promotions involve a relocation which not many people are willing to take, thus a tactful way to reject the offer would be to simply let your bosses know of your current situation and that the relocation would mean an issue in your part. A good idea for this tactic is to mention that you are having your kids in school and that having to relocate to another place would devastate them. Or ?I really love to get that new job but I can?t take my sick wife at a farther distance from the hospital? and many others.

You can also decline a generous offer for a promotion by clearly stating that you are more productive and useful if you are on your current position. As an example, you can say "That is definitely a great offer. I'm sure it pays better than my present job however I've learned a few things on what my position requires and I believe that I can excel in doing those.?

Another good way to turn down that generous offer for a better position is to simply say that your skills or expertise does not match the requirements of the offered position. Simply have them picture what you are doing and what your key skills are whenever you are on that current position. Compare the positions being pictured and in which position you will probably excel in.

Having to turn down an offer is really quite difficult not only because it is not normal to do so but also because it comes with more responsibilities, challenges and a higher level of skill requirement. However, if you would consider these tips mentioned in this post then you will have no difficulty doing so.
