Update Your Fire Security Plan

By Mark Mahaffey

Does your company have a plan for fire safety? If not, you should make one now. Because many people die each year in fires, it is important for you to do everything you can to reduce the chances that your business will be the next victim.

One of the first things you should do is install an alarm system that can detect the presence of fire, smoke and heat in your building. When a fire breaks out, seconds matter. The sooner you can be alerted to the presence of the fire the safer you will be, because you will have more time to exit the building.

Marking all exits in your office is also important. When there is smoke, it can be hard to see, especially if you are in a panic. By putting brightly lit exit signs above all exits out of the building, you will make it easier to escape. This is a very important part of your fire security plan.

Sprinkler systems also make it safer in your building. If you do not have this type of system installed, contact your security company for details. When these sprinklers are installed, they can be activated by your alarm system. They will spray water on the fire, possibly keeping it under control until help arrives.

You would do well also to hold meetings with your employees, so that you can go over your security plan with them each month. Make sure they understand what to do when a fire breaks out, including a common meeting place once everyone leaves the building. It is also a good idea to have practice fire drills.

Do your employees know how to use fire extinguishers? Do you have some in your building? Having fire extinguishers is important because they can be used to put out fires before they grow out of control. Just be sure to train your staff on the proper way to use the extinguishers.
