Women are becoming involved in professional sports more than ever before. Although, at pay much lower than male counterparts. When one looks closely, it becomes clear that pay is not the only aspect in which women are treated differently. As such, it is clear that there is a definitive presence of sexism in sports.
Though, the problem is not only seen on the monetary front, it can also be seen when it comes areas of broadcasting, coaches, teammates and others. For, while some feminists may decide to move into the NBA as assistant coaches, not all will have the same desire, or opportunity.
While the article is based on players salaries and caps, there is no information as to what others in the field are earning. Most likely because most do not want to know the difference between the pay of men compared to women. For, regardless of a history with the NBA, women in general are going to still less make than male counterparts.
Two areas in which teams are still mostly masculine compared to other sports in which the broadcasters and players seem to have soften over the years are hockey and football. Whether due to risk of injury, or denial based on sex, these two sports are often quite brutal compared to baseball, basketball and others.
While some girls may be able to play football, those in private schools may not have the same chance unless sponsored and supported by the institution in which one is enrolled. If not, then the girls at the school have only one option, change the mind of the administrators. A task which is often hard in public schools, much less private.
One area in which women have broken into the field, though are still receiving less in the way of salaries than me is sports broadcasting. There are a few women broadcasters in the NBA, as well as the WNBA, and a few in other sports. Though, overall the percentage is also less when it comes to the number of female versus male broadcast personalities providing live information on television during live games.
Girls who are interested in sports though do not wish to play on a team may want to look into the field of sports broadcasting. While not as prestigious as being part of a major, or minor league team, broadcasters are an essential element when it comes to keeping fans entertained and informed during live games. Whether a live game broadcaster, radio or television, all are positions that will most likely continue to have great demand in the future.
Upon recognizing these and other realities related to the disparity between women and men, it becomes clear that in sports and other areas, sexism continues to be an issue. It will be interesting to see what the future holds now that a woman has made it to the NBA as Assistant Coach of the Spurs. Although, the findings may only be more bad news unless things change in all worlds in which women work.
