By Joyce Taylor

When you think about keeping domestic animals cows, sheep, goats and horses are what come to mind. Most people keep these animals not just because they like them, but because they provide them with income. Currently, more people have started keeping alpaca Nashville. These small camelids are gentle, easy to take care of and can also give you good money if you invest in them properly.

Most farmers who have alpacas on their farms are breeding them, keeping them for wool, or keeping them as pets. Unlike most animals, there are only two breeds of the camelid which are the suri and the huacaya. They are similar but the suri has a soft fleece that looks like pencil locks, while the huacaya has a dense fleece.

These beautiful animals may look like they come with a lot of work, but surprisingly they do not. You will need to shear the wool, trim their toenails, and occasionally give them dewormers. However, unlike other animals, you will not be concerned about checking their hooves, or bloating when they eat the wrong thing.

The size of land you will need will depend on how many of them you plan to keep. They are herbivores and, therefore will comfortably graze on the fodder available. You might need to supply them with extra food during the dry season, or if a female has just given birth. Although they like to move around, you will not need to worry about them destroying your fences. Male alpacas have been known to jump over low fences, but it is rare, and only when they want to go to a female.

These animals are curious and pretty intelligent but also come with a range of personalities. You might end up with some that are shy, others which are friendly, and even some which are proud. However, one thing they all have in common is that they are very social. Therefore, keeping them on their own will actually affect their wellbeing.

It is true that camelids spit at people, but this happens rarely and mainly when they have had too much contact with humans. Alpacas rarely fight, do not bite or even chase people. Actually, if you scare them they will just lie down. Although they are friendly and you might be tempted to spend a lot of time with them, this is discouraged.

If you plan to start keeping these animals, you first need to decide why you want to keep them this will determine the breed you buy the sex and also their age. If you are keeping them for their wool, most people advise going with gelded males. However, you can also buy two teenage animals of either sex and keep them both for breeding, and for the wool.

If you have never kept livestock before, then you should read up. This will help you know what to expect. You can also hire someone who has experience dealing with these animals, to help you out. There are a number of farms that keep alpacas in the area. Getting in touch with one of the owners can give you a chance to actually see what goes on, before you start raising your own herd.
