Important Things You Should Know About Balikbayan Shipping

By Donald Williams

Many are times that our loved ones go to look for work abroad in search of greener pastures. We may manage to keep in touch with them but it would be really expensive for you to meet them in person since the distance may be of out of reach at the moment. This is why for the Filipino people, there is Balikbayan shipping. This is whereby they get to send packages to their family back in the Philippines.

You should be aware of how much taxation you have to incur while sending this packages. The last thing you want is for the package to be withheld due to lack of funds to clear it up. The fee has actually increased from 10,000pessos to 150,000. This will go on to make it harder for the majority of the overseas workers to send the packages back home.

In some cases, people are able to send the packages free of taxation. This, however, applies to specific groups of Filipinos. A Filipino who has citizenship of the Philippines but is seeking to get a second one abroad. One staying abroad on a temporary basis and holds visa such as the investor, student or even tourist.

The question is, do you have to be a Philippine to send these Balikbayan packages? The answer is no. A person from any origin and is living abroad can go on to send these packages. They, however, have to pay the taxation fee. As earlier mentioned, a person originally from the Philippines can send the package free of tax but only if they meet certain expectations.

At this point, you may be wondering what is the limit to you sending boxes to your loved ones. If you want to enjoy the shipping privileges, you should stick to sending the package three times in a year and keep the value at a maximum of p150,000 per package. If you, however, do not care for the privilege, you can ship as much as you want.

Like every other kind of shipping, there are some items that you will not be allowed to ship as they are considered illegal. Therefore, it does no matter if you have met every requirement in the book, if it is illegal you cannot ship it. This includes, for example, drugs that are not prescribed to the recipient, firearms, and explosives.

It is possible that what you want to send is not within the limitations given in order to acquire privileges. This includes the size and value of your box. In such a scenario, you just need to add some tax money and you will be okay. If they, however, find anything suspicious in the x-ray check, it may take a bit longer for your box to be shipped.

There is no such thing as a limitation to how small the box is or how the value is. But in the event that your box is of the value of p10,000 or less, you will not be taxed. You may send as many as of such boxes as much as you want.
