For many people, there is a fascination about paranormal events and sightings. The Virginia City ghost town claims to be one of the most haunted towns in the country. There are sightings and sounds which the promoters bring out to support their claim to ghostliness. For a price, visitors can be taken to locations where they have the opportunity to hear sounds which may be otherworldly in nature. There is also lodging where visitors can spend the night and listen for ghostly sounds. While ghost hunting is not for everyone, stories of the rich history of the ghost town can be entertaining. Here are some of the ghosts which have names and the locations where they are believed to have been sighted over the years.

The Storey County Courthouse - This building was one of several which burned in the Great Fire. The building was reconstructed in 1876. The ghost of a man who hanged himself behind the courthouse has been seen, Peter Larkin is another figure associated with an untimely death. His mistress lied to try to save him, but later recanted thanks to the haunting by her dead husband

St. Mary's Art Center - This structure was originally built in 1864 as St. Mary Louise Hospital. A wheelchair-bound man has been sighted in one of its rooms. A nurse and the man she was trying to save from a hospital fire are two additional spirits which have been seen.

Silver Terrace - The city was a dangerous place with accidents in the mines and fires. There were nearly three hundred deaths reported in the quarter century-plus between 1853 and 1880. Manifestations at the cemetery have been seen which include blue lights, a headstone which glows and a girl ghost wandering in the rows of headstones.

John Piper - The historic Piper's Opera House provided culture and entertainment to residents of the city. Twice burned and rebuilt it is still offering historic programs today. The Mackay Mansion - A young girl known only as Elizabeth has been seen on these premises, as well as six other spirits. One long-haired Asian man, a miner who died in a fire on the grounds of the mansion has been seen by some. Some of those who have seen him say he is warning people of the fire. In the balcony of the mansion, a man smoking a pipe has appeared. A female spirit has been noted at the carriage house, the first floor of the structure and in its dining area.

Rosie and William - Rosie was a prostitute who leaves the scent of her perfume in Room 4 of Gold Hill Hotel and William, a former owner, smokes a cigar in Room 5. He can be felt sitting on the edge of a bed. A little girl is believed to haunt the third floor.

Lena - This prostitute frequents the Washoe Gentleman's Club. She has been seen wearing a blue dress and climbing the spiral staircase leading to the second floor. Several deaths occurred in an explosion and a man committed suicide in one of the third floor rooms in the 1990s.
