Problems Facing Railroad Track Maintenance

By Harriet Porter

Maintenance involve the daily monitoring and repair or railway roads to ensure that they are in perfect working condition. This involves checks and repairs on the lights, rail and power supply. Railroad Track Maintenance is essential in making sure that there are no unpleasant surprises in the rail transport system and smooth operation on a daily basis.

Railway repair works can prove to be quite the nuisance to surrounding residents as they are very noisy. It is for this reason that in the event of such activities some measures be taken to ensure a reduction in such disruption. Generally, this would mean making the engineers mindful about the residents around where they are working and using well maintained, less noisy tools.

As a result, it may be important to notify the residents around a potential working site at least 10 days before work begins. It may also be necessary to notify local authorities about such planned works and projects.

The information dissemination could be done through distribution of letters to the locals near where the works will be. The media can also be used to achieve this. These should aim at explaining exactly what the maintenance crew are going to do and when they expect to start and finish it. Sometimes, it may even be necessary to inform official representatives such as members of parliament and councilors.

Most of the time, however, sending notifications prior to repair work activity is not feasible. This is because the railway works throughout the day all week and some emergency repairs have to be taken care of fast. Otherwise it would lead to a great inconvenience to its users. This facility should as a result be taken care of and maintained on a daily basis without any delays.

This is even worse when you consider that most of the repair and maintenance drills take place at night and on weekends. Most countries actually make it a law that railway repairs take place when they are closed. This has made living along railways a big problem.

Another problem comes in with the planning of schedules related to maintenance and repairs. This is from the fact that railways operate around the clock with miles of track, level crossings and bridges. It is imperative therefore to take good care of these facilities to ensure that the transport services are smooth, convenient and reliable.

On deciding a plan to manage and a railway track, projects and programs have to be planned and agreed upon months before implementation by train and freight companies. These projects are usually meant to be a means to a larger programme. Small changes in them can cause complications. Finally, the number of engineers are few and as a result end up having to take on a lot of work. Taking shifts also becomes problem. So the same staff have to engage in endless work to manage the railway infrastructure. It is evident that extra labor force should be considered.
