Finding A Company For Global Shipping

By Patrick Wagner

From time to time, you may need to send documents or parcels to other countries by using a carrier service. When looking for a company to handle your global shipping needs, there are some important things for you to consider. There are many companies trading that specialize in sending items overseas and a little homework is needed.

Many different items can be sent around the world from documents, passports and packages to larger bulky items such as furniture and vehicles. Before selecting a company, you should price up the costs after calling a few firms and making comparisons. The prices you are charged for sending your items abroad will depend on a few key things.

Before contacting a reliable shipper you need to know how heavy your item is and its measurements to correctly calculate the volume. Small parcels and single documents can often be sent for a set fee and bigger packages are billed per kilogram or by volume. You will need to get the items well packaged and labeled before they are collected or dropped off. The majority of couriers will supply you with packaging at a reasonable price.

Another factor that will affect the price of shipping is the destination country and the time it takes to get the item there. The majority of firms will offer various services from a premium same day carriage going up to up to ten to fourteen days for a non urgent package. Parcels and documents can be shipped to most countries but it is worth checking beforehand as some destinations will have restrictions at certain times.

When the packages are picked up or you take them to the depot, you will be given paperwork which you need to read carefully before you sign. This documentation will detail the delivery address, description, weight and a unique serial number. This number will enable you to log on to the internet and track your packages progress.

When doing your research to find a company, and working out the costs, you should contact as many firms as possible to compare them. The larger firms are the preferred option but some small independent couriers are well worth checking out. Many small firms will use the larger carriers to handle their freight and they get a lower rate due to the amount of business they do.

One benefit when using an independent firm is that you will usually have the option to pay with credit card or cash. When using one of the larger businesses, you will first need to open an account with them before they will handle any packages. If you are going to be sending items frequently, it may beneficial for you to open an account, as a better rate may be negotiated.

Before sending items with a shipping firm, it is important to get insurance to cover your documents or packages against damages or loss. Shipping companies do have their own transit cover but you have the option of using other insurers. When taking out your own insurance cover, you will need the full replacement value your items, prior to obtaining your quote.
