Finding Out How Many Americans Are Unemployed Is Hard To Pin Down

By George Collins

The number of unemployed people is a matter that is not talked about by the politicians in a truthful way. Some political talking heads will say that the number of unemployed is simply because of the aging of the population. Others will make you think the problem is not so bad. When you ask the question about how many Americans are unemployed, you have to weight through a lot of specious talk.

The short answer to the question is, of course, too many. Taking a look at how this number is computed is very telling. The unemployment rate is based, of course, on how many people are looking for work and how many people are actually working. The math involved reduces this to a mixed number, with what is called full employment being four percent.

The reported number, right now, is officially five point one. The big problem to this is that most recent White House administrations flub the numbers. Some a little, some a lot. It depends on what message they are trying to send. One way they fudge them is by over estimating the number of jobs created.

Another way that is used to fuss with these numbers is to over estimate, or flat out lie, about how jobs are being created at any point in time. The administration thinks they can make people believe the government creates jobs whenever they decree it. Government, through taxes, regulations and mandates only destroy private jobs and grow government ones.

The entire problem with the Federal government reporting these numbers, the numbers they create, is that they can pull them from just about anywhere. This is done to make themselves look good. It does not, however, really bear on anywhere near the truth. There are people who have simply stopped looking for work because there are no jobs available. These people are not counted as unemployed anymore, so they are not unemployed according to the politicians who boast it is because of them they are off the unemployment roles.

There are not an awful lot of jobs available, due to the economy, brought on by various decisions that have not worked out right. The federal government believes they know how to create jobs and have fallen victim to their own press releases. They mandate all of the increased taxes that, they say, will grow the economy but they only kill jobs.

Depending on who you ask, there is about 95 million people officially out of work in the United States. When you factor this number into the population of approximately 330 million, minus those who are not of working age, you get a number that is about at the five point one level they report. Again, these are numbers they put together, so no one knows what is really going.

Full time jobs have been redefined down from 40 hours per week to 32. This has condemned many people to having to go on food stamps, or SNAP. It also means accepting alternative housing, such as living with their parents, again. So getting an answer about this subject from the government does not give you an accurate picture of the situation.
