By Ryan Lewis

When disasters strike, the face of humanity is revealed through outpouring of donations. The most disheartening thing is to realize that the sacrifice you made went into the pocket of a fake charity. Every donor should avoid such a scenario by identifying genuine charities for Jamaica. Here are hints that should alert you that you are dealing with a fake or genuine charity.

One of the easiest identifies is availability of a verifiable physical address. This is the same case with businesses. If the physical address is known, it is easy to put such an organization to task or learn more about a campaign or collection. Check the address indicated on pamphlets, emails or websites. Engage the organization before donation with the aim of verifying existence at the said address.

The people who associate with an organization will indicate whether it is fake or genuine. Check whether any celebrity, brand, business, association, etc has endorsed the charity. Major humanitarian organizations also indicate the charities that are assisting them in mobilization, reaching people on the ground, logistics, etc. Endorsement is done by people or organizations that have the muscle to verify whether the charities are genuine or not. This can be regarded as a public referral.

Talking of recommendation, do you want to donate money or in kind and have no idea where to go? Talk to a friend, relative, colleague, neighbor, etc. You will get genuine suggestions on organizations you can work with. A referral is good because those making the referral have already worked with these organizations. They have justified the existence of the charity and are even ready to support.

Humanitarian needs and disasters receive a lot of media attention. If an organization has been featured severally, it is an indication of a genuine brand. The existence of a scandal on news should also alert you that such an organization is embezzling funds. Check over the internet, broadcast stations, social media and any other outlet that covers charities. This will help you know the reputation of organizations you are working with.

Charity organizations receive accreditation based on their target area. The accreditation should be included on their website for public scrutiny. Accreditation bodies also provide a list of charities working in each area. If your target charity is missing, you have every reason to disassociate with the group.

You would like to see that your money or donation has made an impact in the lives of people. There is no better way to do this than through results. Any charity that cannot justify its existence through tangible results is likely to be embezzling funds. For instance, if a charity is involved in medical assistance, it should show health facilities, communities that have received assistance, etc. The results should be verifiable and most recent.

The most rewarding feeling is to know that the money or donation you made changed the life of people. The world will only change when donations go towards the intended people. It also gives you joy to know that you changed the destiny of a needy person.
