How Is Your Business Security Strategy?

By Mark Mahaffey

Did you know that every year, millions of dollars' worth of products are stolen from businesses? It is true. If you own your own retail store, there are criminals out there who would like to steal from you. And criminals are sophisticated these days. They are smart and sneaky, which means that you have to be extra diligent to protect yourself from them.

The good news is that there are several things you can do to improve your business security. The last thing you need is to lose money to crime, especially when you can do so much to lessen the chances that you will be a victim of shoplifting.

The first issue to consider is whether or not you have hired sufficient staff. It is important to have as many workers in your store as you can afford. This is because it is important to personally greet each person who comes into your store.

If you staff is diligent to personally greet each person as they enter, you will probably have less shoplifting to deal with. This is because criminals rely on secrecy to do much of their stealing. If they are aware that someone is keeping an eye on them, they will be less likely to try to steal from you.

Do you do bag checks in your store? Essentially, a bag check is simply the process of making sure that when a customer leaves your store, his shopping bags only contain merchandise that has been paid for. Some people may try to enter your store with bags from other stores and attempt to put stolen items in the. Bags checks reduce this threat.

Another thing you can do is to watch out for tag switching. Some customers will try to get away with paying a cheaper price for merchandise by putting a cheaper price tag on an item before they bring it to the cash register. Make sure your employees are aware of this trick and have them be on the lookout for it.
