Choosing A Firm To Handle Global Shipping

By Ruth Taylor

Nowadays many companies and individuals need to send items overseas using courier companies. When looking for a firm to handle global shipping there are a few things to take into consideration before sending items. There are many shippers available worldwide to handle this business in a professional way and at reasonable cost.

Small items such as contracts or legal documents going up to larger freight can be sent to most countries. When selecting a carrier to handle this business it is advisable to get the best price by doing a little homework. A few important factors can affect the fees charged and vary depending on the company used.

Initially the weight of the package needs to be obtained and some thought given as to how it will be wrapped to prevent damage. Many little items such as paperwork can be sent for a standard fee with heavier packets charged per kilo or by size if large but not so weighty. It is normally the sender's responsibility to parcel up the items prior to collection but many firms will offer this service for a small fee.

The costs incurred in sending will also depend on how quickly the item needs to be dispatched and handled. Most of the larger carriers offer a same day service for very urgent deliveries and this can be costlier than a standard seven to ten day service. Nearly every country in the world is on carriers shipping lists but some checks should be made first when booking.

After the item has been collected from the home or business some paperwork will be issued and signed by the sender and the courier. This paperwork is very important and should be kept as it lists the destination details and will have a tracking number. This tracking number enables the sender to monitor the progress of the item on its journey using an online service.

When obtaining quotes and lists of services offered it is good practice to look at as many firms as possible. The bigger companies are generally the better option but small local couriers may also be available in many cases. Some of these smaller businesses will get a better rate for an individual as they will collect and use the large company but due to the amount they send will get a better price.

Small carriers are often the better choice for an individual as they will allow cash or credit card payment. The larger firms will often require the sender to open an account before doing any business. If sending items regularly it may be worth opening an account as a better rate can be negotiated depending on frequency of shipping.

After deciding which company to use it is imperative that the items to be shipped are adequately covered by insurance. Large companies and independent couriers will offer to arrange cover or it can be sourced separately. After assessing the value and replacement cost of the package appropriate insurance can be obtained to cover damage in transit or loss due to misrouting.
