Dental Office Design Ideas That Dentists Can Implement

By Angela Briggs

Investing in an attractive dental office design is a lasting and valuable improvement that every dentist should think about. If you are remodeling your clinic or creating a new one, consider implementing a few important aspects of design that will help you make your clinic attractive, quiet and comfortable to work in. The common factors that you should address when designing your office include aesthetics, easy access to equipment and materials and noise control.

One of the essential elements of designing a dental practice is the size of the office. It should be large enough to accommodate the needs of your patients and personnel. As you plan the square footage of your clinic, you should also avoid unnecessary spending on floor space that will not be used. Furthermore, you should ensure that the space can accommodate the future plan you have for your practice.

The other important aspect of a well designed dental clinic is the centralization and streamlining of sterilization systems, labs and storage. Instruments should be sterilized using fast operating equipment. It is essential to ensure that your clinic is designed in manner that allows personnel to restock supplies quickly and easily eliminate outdated supplies. A streamlined inventory system also makes it easy for personnel to access supplies and prevents patients from viewing them.

Installing soundproofing materials in the walls of a clinic is also important. This will ensure that patients in the waiting room and examination room do not hear the squeal of dental drills. Designing acoustics involves more than soundproofing rooms. It also involves erecting physical barriers, strategic door and window placements and installing contemporary ceiling and wall coverings.

When designing the treatment room, make sure that its size is nether neither too large nor too small. This will help you reduce plumbing and electricity costs. The treatment room should be able to accommodate important equipment. You may choose to partially enclose this room with low wall partitions that have sliding or folding screens or enclose it fully especially if it is large.

It is also wise to design your clinic in a manner that allows patients to enjoy an open and cutting edge waiting room. Avoid placing barriers between your front office personnel and patients so that the waiting room atmosphere will be pleasant and relaxed. You can also install wall speakers and soft lighting in the waiting room and place reading materials and comfortable furniture in it.

Since providing dental care to patients can be stressful, you should consider creating an area where your staff members can relax and socialize at break times. This area should be situated far away from the clinical area. In order to be able to see the activities going on in your clinic easily, you can locate your private office near the clinical area.

Another essential element of dental office design is lab links. The laboratory directly feeds resupply and it should therefore not be isolated. It is essential for a convenient and quick transfer to take place between these locations but they should be physically separate. The lab should have a door even if the amount of model work performed in it is minimal.
